Mahahual
is north of Xcalak in the Costa Maya. It was the location of a great
Cruise Ship experiment that was to open another Western Caribbean Port
in Mexico. At first the workers had to be brought by bus from Cancun
4.5 hours to the north. In time a small community grew up along the
beach to compliment the passenger terminal and to cater to the water
born tourists. We were once again looking to find new destinations for
dive travel but Mahahual was a disappointment. The diving is designed
to fit the cruise ships and the quality is limited to two hasty 30
minute dives tailored to fit the time restraints and the skill levels
of the cruise ship passengers. If diving is the primary purpose of your
visit, Xcalak is a better choice for experienced dive travelers. Check
out the stairs below and try to imagine a building inspector in the
United States.
