"THERE'S NO SCULLING IN SCUBA!"
|
"No performance requirement in SCUBA Diving is more poorly defined or less often achieved than....Buoyancy Control." |
A PICTURE CAN BE WORTH A THOUSAND
WORDS
[ but it can't record sculling ] |
SCULLING IS THE HALLMARK OF
SUBSTANDARD BUOYANCY SKILLS!
STILL PHOTOGRAPHY: will show; loose tank straps, hose halos,
danglies and divers who wear gloves on warm water dives. All of those flaws
represent "Indications of a Substandard Diver".
|
The
three still photos below represent the divers of our staff....BUT:
Just
as with every other photo, that you have ever seen, of divers, these
photos only testify to how that diver looked for, perhaps,
1/250th of a second.
"IF" you want to see what Exceptional Buoyancy Skills really look like, you need to see moving pictures. So we have included some video (below). Seeing us through the faceplate of your mask while you are underwater, where you can try to imitate what you have just observed, will be even better. In fact, learning buoyancy in exactly this way has no equal. Ask yourself why more buoyancy experts are reluctant to include more moving images of their skills? |
WHAT YOU WON'T SEE IN
OUR STILL PHOTOS....and what you should never see in any photo of a
good diver are: GLOVES on a warm water dive.
Yes, WE KNOW, "loose
tank straps happen".... DANGLIES of any kind or size. HOSE HALOS...or LOOSE TANK STRAPS BUT if you don't have any photos of divers without loose tank straps....you don't have any photos of good divers! |
NOTICE: No loose tank straps
& "no danglies"!
|
A DEPARTURE FROM NORMAL PROFILE. A DIVER THAT HAS GOOD BUOYANCY SKILLS CAN ASSUME A DIFFERENT POSTURE TEMPORARILY SUCH AS WHEN LOOKING UNDERNEATH CORAL FORMATIONS OR PHOTOGRAPHING TURTLES WHILE SWIMMING BESIDE THEM. THE DIVER IN THE PHOTO (LEFT) IS STILL IN HORIZONTAL TRIM AS HE ROLLS ON TO HIS SIDE. AND HE IS STILL USING A MODIFIED FROG KICK. MOST DIVERS WON'T BE ABLE TO EVEN IMAGINE SUCH A MOVE. NOTE THAT THERE ARE STILL NO DANGLIES OR HOSE HALOS. DANGLING GEAR AND GIANT LOOPS OF HOSE ARE A FAMILIAR FEATURE OF MOST DIVE MAGAZINE PHOTOS. |
THIS IS MORE LIKE IT! THE DIVER (ON THE RIGHT) IS HORIZONTAL . HIS KNEES ARE BENT SO THAT HIS FINS ARE UP AWAY FROM THE SAND OR AWAY FROM THE CORAL IF HE HAD BEEN OVER THE REEF AND AWAY FROM THE SILT IF HE WAS IN A CAVE. THIS IS WHAT A DIVER SHOULD LOOK LIKE MOST OF THE TIME. THE BCD WINGS ARE NOT TOO BIG AND FLOPPY. THE SIMPLE NAKED BRASS PRESSURE GUAGE IS CLIPPED OFF TO A D-RING AND THE WRIST MOUNTED COMPUTER ELIMINATES THE CHANCE OF AN UGLY DANGLING CONSOLE. THIS DIVER IS BREATHING FROM A FIVE FOOT LONG CAVERN HOSE AND HIS BACK UP REGULATOR IS ON A NECKLACE. HE IS NOT WEARING A SNORKEL. LOOSE OR FLAPPING TANK STRAPS DO HAPPEN BUT IT IS BAD FORM TO INCLUDE THEM IN A PHOTO SO EVEN IF EVERYTHING ELSE ABOUT THIS PICTURE WAS EXCELLENT, WE NEVER WOULD HAVE INCLUDED A PHOTO WITH SUCH A FLAW. THIS DIVER IS FROG KICKING. |
NO OVERSIZED FLOPPY WINGS....NO SPLIT FINS! |
LOOK: No hose halos and no hanging octopus 2nd stage! |
FROG KICK YOU REALLY CANT TELL MUCH FROM LOOKING AT A STILL PHOTO OF A DIVER. DIVERS NEED TO BE SEEN IN MOVING PICTURES. A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THIS IS THE ONLINE PHOTO OF A DIVER ( A VERTICAL DIVER ) ON A DECO STOP WHO IS CONNECTED TO A SET OF DOUBLES ONLY BY A HOSE. WE ARE ASKED TO ASSUME THAT THIS IS AN ACTUAL DEMONSTRATION OF SOME SORT OF IMPRESSIVE BUOYANCY CONTROL STUNT BUT A 1/250TH OF A SECOND SHUTTER SPEED CAN FREEZE ANY IMAGE. SO WE CAN'T BE SURE OF WHAT EXACTLY IS TAKING PLACE. THE SAME THING IS TRUE OF THE DIVER TO THE LEFT. HER FINS ARE AT THE BEGINNING OF A FROG KICK. NEXT SHE WILL FLEX HER ANKLES AND MOVE THE BOTTOM SURFACE OF HER LONG FINS TOGETHER. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT SHE IS DOING, YOU MUST WATCH OUR VIDEO BELOW AND SEE WHAT THIS SAME DIVER LOOKS LIKE IN A MOVING PICTURE. |
HERE ARE SOME MOVING IMAGES OF OUR STAFF "With still photography, much is left to the imagination. You won't have to guess how "we" really look!" |
FIN
PIVOTING AND BUDDHA HOVERING ARE TWO TEACHING SKILLS THAT DON'T
TRANSLATE INTO ANYTHING WORTH USING DURING A DIVER'S CAREER. WHILE
SHOWING THEM AS A METHOD OF DEMONSTRATING ONE'S BUOYANCY CAPABILITIES
UNDERWATER, AS A STUDENT, MAY HAVE SOME WORTH; SHOWING THEM IN STILL
PHOTOS TO PROMOTE A BUOYANCY SKILLS CLINIC, IS SUBJECT TO THE
1/250TH OF A SECOND RULE. FIN TIP PIVOTING WAS YOUR "POTTY TRAINING",
FOR BUOYANCY CONTROL, AFTER YOU WERE ALLOWED TO BE OVERWEIGHTED
AND WERE KEPT KNEELING ON THE POOL BOTTOM FOR FAR TOO LONG. THE SOONER
YOU DISCONTINUE BEING PHOTOGRAPED IN THESE POSTURES, THE BETTER. |
THE BOTTOM LINE IS: NO MATTER HOW BIG THE DIVE AGENCY IS OR HOW PROLIFIC AN AUTHOR MIGHT BE, THERE IS LITTLE EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THE NOTION THAT YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR BUOYANCY CONTROL SKILLS BY READING A BOOK OR A BLOG OR BY BEING READ TO FROM AN OUTLINE. HOW LONG A PERSON HAS BEEN DIVING AND HOW MANY DIVES THEY HAVE DONE TRANSLATES, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, INTO A MASTERY OF SUBSTANDARD SKILLS BECAUSE OF A MISUNDERSTANDING OF WHAT EXCEPTIONAL FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS REALLY LOOK LIKE. IN FACT WE THINK THAT IS THE REASON THAT BUOYANCY SKILLS ARE SO POORLY DEFINED AND PRACTICED ACROSS THE ENTIRE SPECTRUM OF RECREATIONAL DIVING CERTIFICATION LEVELS AS WELL AS MOST OF THE LEADERSHIP CORPS. WE BELIEVE THAT SEEING EXCEPTIONAL BUOYANCY SKILLS THROUGH THE FACEPLATE OF YOUR MASK HAS NO EQUAL AND THAT STILL PHOTOS ARE INFERIOR TO MOVING PICTURES WHEN THE GOAL IS TO JUDGE THE VALUE OF FUNDAMENTAL SCUBA SKILLS. "IF" YOU ARE SEEKING A BUOYANCY CONTROL MENTOR, VIEWING MOVING IMAGES OF PROSPECTIVE COACHES WILL HAVE MORE VALUE, IN HELPING YOU TO DECIDE, THAN RHETORIC, IMPRESSIVE CREDENTIALS OR STILL PHOTOS. |

THE STATUS QUO: has
been unable to identify and establish a standard for Exceptional
Buoyancy Control SKILLS
SO....they
have substituted surface swimming skills....i.e. "A good swimmer equals
a good diver!"
BUT THAT'S NOT TRUE!!!!!

DON'T USE STILL PHOTOS OF BUDDHA HOVERING TO MEASURE GOOD BUOYANCY SKILLS!
Those pictures only show how a diver looked for a fraction of a second. |
